What Is Grief?

Grief is our response to a loss, typically the death of someone close to us, and learning to cope with this loss. It is a highly emotional response, but it can also take a physical toll on your body as well as affecting you socially.

The grieving process impacts all of us differently and at different times. It can be highly stressful and bring up a lot of subconscious emotions. Learning to cope with these feelings is extremely challenging, however there are a lot of small things you can do to ensure that you are looking after yourself during such a difficult time.

How Can I Make Sure I’m Looking After Myself?

These are some simple tips that you can use to help look after yourself during the grieving process:

● Don’t Hide Your Feelings - It’s easy to push down your feelings and ignore them, but if you feel sad or upset or angry, it can help if you let yourself feel those emotions. The good, the bad and the ugly. Bottling them up can worsen those negative feelings and have you feeling even worse.

● Reach Out - Whether it’s friends, family or a therapist, reaching out to people is a good way to keep yourself social and prevent you from hiding away from others. Grief may make you feel like you want to be alone, but reaching out and maintaining relationships is very helpful for the healing process.

● Memories - Don’t be afraid to look through old photos, watch old videos and immerse yourself in memories. Thinking about happy times can improve how you feel and remembering your loved one in a positive way is one of the best things you can do.

● Self-Care - Taking time to practise self care and do nice things for yourself is important for maintaining your well-being and being kind to yourself during this time.

● Professional Help - If you feel like you would benefit from seeking professional help, talking to a counsellor or a therapist can be extremely useful for those experiencing grief. You can find a range of therapists or counsellors online who will be able to help you.
